#6: Buenos Aires Summer Project
Summer 2008
It all started at Campus Crusade's Christmas conference in 2007. They had breakout seminars and for some reason I felt I needed to go to the one about STINTing (short term international trips) even though I was a sophomore and you only STINT after graduating. But I heard them talking about starting a new team in Buenos Aires, Argentina and it somehow caught my attention. For a while I was praying about taking a year off school and going overseas, but then decided against it. But I had some good friends who were seniors that year who did decide to STINT to BA that following Fall. So I just started praying for them and for Argentina. For no apparent reason (well it was not apparent then) God was breaking my heart for this country. I couldn't figure out why, but then sometime a year or so later someone challenged me to go on Summer Project (Cru's summer mission trips) to Buenos Aires. I had never gone on Summer Project, but had only heard amazing things about it. The catch was that you had to raise the money to go yourself and that scared the crap out of me ($4800!). But I went ahead and applied and was accepted to the first ever Buenos Aires Summer Project! Me and 12 other college kids and a handful of staff members spent that spring raising support to get pay for our time over there and Jehovah Jireh- the Lord provided! (another cool story: my grandpa who passed away several years before apparently had bonds in my name that I was able to cash and use for my trip...what a blessing!).
My time in BA was such an enriching time for me. I made some great friends, learned how to boldly share my faith (in spanish mind you!), and was able to see God's heart for the world. It was so awesome living there and experiencing their culture and really falling in love with the people there. I remember one day we had worship and we all stood by the big bay window in our hotel watching the sunset over the city while singing "God of This City" and my heart was just so burdened for them, but so thankful that God is so much more jealous for their hearts. Because we were the first group there, our time wasn't as "fruitful" as other projects, but we really helped pave the road for future teams. They are moving to an entirely Argentine-run staff team now, which is so awesome! God is raising up native leaders that are much more effective then a bunch of white, American kids.
I am so thankful to God for the year and a half leading up to BASP, as well as the month or so I spent there. I think the process was just as rewarding as my actual time there. I was always hold BA in a special place in my heart and will forever be bonded to my team I served with.
